SRI LANKA
2006
The Sri Lankan Civil War from 1983-2009 resulted in the deaths of at least 100,000 people, tens of thousands missing and hundreds of thousands displaced.
The war was mainly a clash between the Sinhalese dominated Sri Lankan Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) with the LTTE fighting for an independent Tamil state in the north-east of the island.
By 2006 the ceasefire agreement of December 2001 was collapsing and hostilities resumed with the government eventually defeating the LTTE in May 2009.
At the end of the war the United Nations accused both sides of atrocities especially during the final stages of the conflict.
